Hela

Our electricity was out the other day so I couldn't work on my digital illustrations. Instead I decided to take a break from my Playing Card series and do some more fan art using watercolours. A while back my brother was watching an animated Avengers show which featured Hela Marvel’s version of Hel the Norse Goddess of Death.

I know a bit about Norse mythology but not much when it comes to comics so I had to look up her information on Wikipedia. She is a bit more promiscuous in the comics but I decided to do a younger, more innocent version of her here. I have not yet seen the Thor movie but look forward to it so I’ve made a movie-verse inspired Hela. I think she’s in Jotunheim (I should know) possibly searching for her mother, the giantess Angrboda, only armed with a dagger and not all that keen to use it. I thought she could be the equivalent of 12/ 13 years old which could work since her father, Loki looks as though he’s in his early 30s.

She is not yet a Death Goddess as she is only appointed to the position when she’s older so I decided not to make her body blackened and charred on the one side. I wanted to keep the duality of her appearance so instead I made one half look more Asgardian and the other Jotun (as a reference to her heritage). She does not really feel the cold which is how she gets away with wearing this outfit, which has elements of her more extreme comic costume. Her face is loosely based off Emma Hiddleston, Tom’s lesser-known actress sister. I advise everyone to Google her as she’s quite lovely, very petite.
